Cooling

AC Repair in Southeastern Massachusetts

When central air conditioning fails on a 90-degree, high-humidity Southeastern Massachusetts afternoon, the house turns uncomfortable fast — and for families with young kids, older relatives, or anyone sensitive to the heat, it's more than an inconvenience. Quality Home Heating & Air gets out quickly, finds the real cause, and gets your system cooling again, with the honest answer about what failed and why.

We've repaired central AC across the South Shore and South Coast since 1988, on every major brand and on systems of every age. That experience matters with diagnostics: a system blowing warm air can be a tripped breaker, a failed capacitor, a seized compressor, a refrigerant leak, or a frozen indoor coil — and the fix (and the cost) is wildly different for each. We don't guess and we don't throw parts at the problem. We test, we measure, and we tell you what we find.

Every repair starts with a thorough diagnosis and upfront pricing — you approve the work before we do it, with no surprises. Where a repair clearly makes sense, we make it and verify the system is performing the way it should. Where an aging system isn't worth the money to keep nursing along, we'll tell you that too, and lay out your options honestly — including high-efficiency replacements that qualify for Mass Save rebates and financing.

Common AC problems we repair

  • Blowing warm air or not cooling at all
  • Weak airflow from the vents
  • Frozen indoor coil or ice on the refrigerant lines
  • Water leaks or a flooded condensate pan around the indoor unit
  • Strange noises — buzzing, clicking, grinding, or screeching
  • Short-cycling (turning on and off every few minutes)
  • Spiking electric bills with no change in usage
  • The outdoor unit runs but the house never gets comfortable

What causes these problems

Most no-cool calls trace back to a handful of culprits. Electrical components are the most common: a failed run capacitor, a burned contactor, or a tripped breaker will stop the compressor or fan from starting, often with a hum or a click and no cold air. These are also among the most affordable repairs when caught early — which is one reason fast diagnosis pays off.

A frozen indoor coil is the classic 'it was cooling, now it's blowing warm' complaint. It's usually caused by low airflow (a dirty filter or blocked return), a dirty evaporator coil, or low refrigerant from a leak. The system can't be properly diagnosed until it fully thaws, and simply 'adding refrigerant' without finding the leak just defers the problem — refrigerant doesn't get used up; if the charge is low, it's leaking out somewhere.

Water around the indoor unit points to a clogged condensate drain or a cracked drain pan, which can cause water damage if ignored. Strange noises, short-cycling, and an outdoor unit that runs without cooling can signal anything from a failing fan motor or capacitor to a refrigerant-charge problem or, in the worst case, a failing compressor. Our job is to pinpoint which one — accurately — before you spend a dollar on parts.

How it works

Our process

  1. 1

    Quick scheduling & arrival

We get a technician out promptly — fast when you're cooling out in a heat wave — and arrive ready to diagnose, not just look.

  2. 2

    Full system diagnosis

We inspect the whole system: thermostat, electrical, refrigerant pressures, airflow, the indoor coil, condensate, and the outdoor unit — to find the real cause, not just the symptom.

  3. 3

    Electrical & component testing

We test capacitors, the contactor, the fan and compressor motors, and controls with proper meters so the diagnosis is based on readings, not guesswork.

  4. 4

    Refrigerant evaluation

We check the charge and, when it's low, find the leak rather than just topping it off — because a recharge without a repair won't last.

  5. 5

    Upfront diagnosis & pricing

You get a clear explanation of what failed and an upfront price before any work begins. Nothing gets done without your approval.

  6. 6

    The repair, done right

We make the approved repair with quality parts and correct any underlying issue — like restoring airflow on a frozen coil — so it doesn't come straight back.

  7. 7

    Performance verification

We confirm the system is cooling to spec — checking the temperature split and airflow — before we consider the job done and clean up after ourselves.

What's included

  • Complete system diagnosis with a clear explanation of the cause
  • Electrical testing — capacitor, contactor, relays, and controls
  • Motor testing — condenser fan, blower, and compressor
  • Refrigerant charge evaluation and leak investigation
  • Frozen-coil thaw, airflow check, and root-cause correction
  • Condensate drain and drain-pan inspection and clearing
  • Thermostat operation and calibration check
  • Quality replacement parts for the approved repair
  • Performance verification — temperature split and airflow confirmed
  • Upfront pricing and a tidy cleanup before we leave

Repair or replace?

Sometimes the smartest repair is to stop repairing. As a rule of thumb, if your system is under about 10 years old and the fix is minor, repair almost always wins. Once a unit is 12–15+ years old, needs a major component like a compressor or coil, or runs on phased-out R-22 refrigerant, the math starts favoring replacement.

Refrigerant is often the deciding factor. R-22 ("Freon") was phased out in 2020 and is now expensive and hard to source — so an aging R-22 system with a refrigerant leak is usually better replaced than recharged repeatedly. Modern systems use safer, more efficient refrigerants (R-410A for years, and as of 2025 new equipment such as Lennox runs on R-454B, with R-32 used by some manufacturers), and they deliver real summer energy savings on top of the repair you'd have paid for anyway.

We'll always give you the honest recommendation for your situation — and most of the time, that's a straightforward repair that gets you cooling again the same day. When replacement is genuinely the better value, we'll show you the numbers, including Mass Save rebates and 0% promotional financing, so you can decide with the full picture in front of you.

AC Repair — frequently asked questions

Warm air has several possible causes: a tripped breaker, a failed capacitor or contactor, a frozen indoor coil, a refrigerant leak, or a failing compressor. The fix and cost differ enormously for each, so the right first step is an accurate diagnosis. We test the electrical, refrigerant, and airflow to find the real cause rather than guessing.

“Kevin was great. He took the time with us to describe all options, and the pros and cons of each. His men did the job quickly and efficiently, leaving no trace other than the work they had done. It has only been a few days since they put in our system, but the difference from our old system is evident.”
