Heat Pumps & Mini Splits
Mini Split Repair in Southeastern Massachusetts
A ductless mini-split should be the most effortless comfort in your home — quiet, efficient, room-by-room control all year. So when a head stops heating or cooling, starts dripping water down the wall, or flashes an error code at you, it's frustrating and disruptive, especially in the dead of a Southeastern Massachusetts winter or the peak of summer humidity. The good news is that most mini-split problems are very fixable once they're correctly diagnosed.
Quality Home Heating & Air has serviced ductless systems across the South Shore and South Coast since 1988, and we repair every major brand — not just the ones we sell. Mini-splits are precision inverter-driven equipment: the difference between a quick, lasting fix and a repeat callback usually comes down to whether the technician actually diagnosed the root cause or just replaced parts and hoped. We diagnose first, then fix.
When your system is down, you want it back fast. We work to get you scheduled quickly and arrive with the tools and common parts to resolve most repairs in a single visit. And because we install these systems too, we know how they're supposed to perform — so we'll tell you honestly whether a repair makes sense or whether you're better served putting that money toward a replacement.
Common mini-split problems we fix
- Not heating or not cooling (runs but no temperature change)
- Indoor head leaking or dripping water down the wall
- Blinking lights or error codes on the head or remote
- No power to a head, or it won't respond to the remote
- Weak or reduced airflow from the indoor unit
- Musty, sour, or burning odor when it runs
- Ice or frost building up on the outdoor unit
- Outdoor unit running constantly, short-cycling, or making unusual noise
What causes these problems
Heating or cooling failures most often trace back to refrigerant. Mini-splits are sealed systems that should never lose refrigerant — so low charge means a leak, commonly at a flare connection, the indoor coil, or along the line set. Running a system low on refrigerant doesn't just kill performance; it can ice up the outdoor coil and damage the compressor. Proper repair means finding and fixing the leak, then weighing and charging to spec — not just topping it off.
Airflow and water problems usually come from neglected maintenance. Clogged filters and dirty indoor/outdoor coils choke airflow, drop efficiency, and cause the indoor head to freeze and then drip. The other big leak source is the condensate drain: mini-split drain lines run on a gentle gravity slope and clog easily with algae and dust, sending water out of the head and down your wall instead of outside. Both are common, and both are straightforward to correct.
Electronic faults are the third major category. Inverter mini-splits rely on control boards, communication wiring between the indoor and outdoor units, and a set of sensors (room, coil, and outdoor temperature thermistors). A failed sensor can make the system misread conditions and refuse to run; a communication or board fault typically shows up as a specific blinking-light error code. We read those codes against the manufacturer's service data to pinpoint the failure rather than guessing.
How it works
Our process
- 1
Quick scheduling & arrival
We get you on the schedule promptly and arrive prepared, with diagnostic tools and the parts that resolve most common mini-split failures on the first visit.
- 2
Listen & inspect
We start with what you're seeing — error codes, leaks, odors, when it acts up — then inspect the indoor head(s), outdoor unit, line set, and electrical.
- 3
Read the error codes & test
We pull blinking-light or remote error codes and check them against manufacturer service data, then test refrigerant pressures, sensors, the control board, and airflow.
- 4
Pinpoint the root cause
We isolate the actual cause — a refrigerant leak, clogged condensate drain, failed sensor, dirty coil, or board fault — instead of replacing parts on a hunch.
- 5
Clear, upfront repair quote
You get the diagnosis in plain language and upfront pricing before we do the work — including an honest repair-vs-replace recommendation when it's a close call.
- 6
Repair & verify
We complete the repair, then confirm the fix: temperature split, airflow, refrigerant charge to spec, proper condensate drainage, and no recurring error codes.
- 7
Tips to prevent a repeat
Before we leave, we show you how to keep filters clean and flag anything worth watching so the same problem doesn't bring us back.
What's included
- Full diagnostic of indoor head(s) and outdoor unit
- Manufacturer error-code retrieval and interpretation
- Refrigerant pressure and electrical testing
- Refrigerant leak detection (flares, coil, line set)
- Condensate drain clearing and leak correction
- Filter and coil airflow inspection
- Sensor (thermistor) and control-board testing
- Capacitor, contactor, and wiring checks on the outdoor unit
- Upfront repair pricing before work begins
- Post-repair performance verification (temp split, charge, drainage)
Repair or replace?
Most mini-split repairs are well worth it — these are durable, efficient systems, and a leaking drain, dirty coil, failed sensor, or bad capacitor is a routine fix that gets you years more service. If your system is under about 10 years old and the repair is reasonable relative to the cost of the equipment, repairing almost always wins.
The calculus shifts when the failure is major and the system is older. A failed inverter compressor or control board on a 12–15+ year-old unit, a refrigerant leak in the indoor coil, or a system that's needed several repairs in a short span can cost enough that replacement makes more financial sense — especially since a newer system runs more efficiently and may qualify for substantial Mass Save heat-pump rebates. Older units running phased-out R-410A are another reason to think ahead.
We'll always give you the straight answer for your situation. If a repair is the smart move, we'll fix it. If you'd be throwing good money after bad, we'll tell you that too — and if you choose to replace, we offer flexible financing including 0% promotional financing, terms up to 60 months, and long-term plans up to 10 years so the right system fits your budget.

“Kevin was great. He took the time with us to describe all options, and the pros and cons of each. His men did the job quickly and efficiently, leaving no trace other than the work they had done. It has only been a few days since they put in our system, but the difference from our old system is evident.”
“From the first call to the final walkthrough, the whole team was professional and on time. Our new system runs better than we expected and the price was fair.”
“Honest, knowledgeable, and clean. They explained every option, never upsold us, and had our system running the same day.”
