Furnace Repair in Southeastern Massachusetts

A furnace almost never fails at a convenient time — it gives out on the coldest morning of the year, after a long weekend, or right when the house is full. When that happens, you don't need a sales pitch; you need a real technician who can find the problem quickly, explain it in plain English, and get your heat back on. That's what Quality Home Heating & Air has done across Southeastern Massachusetts since 1988.

We repair every kind of residential furnace — natural gas, propane, oil, and electric — from high-efficiency condensing units to the older workhorses still heating homes across the South Shore and South Coast. Our trucks are stocked with the parts that fail most often (igniters, flame sensors, capacitors, control boards, blower motors, gas valves), so a large share of repairs are finished in a single visit instead of waiting days for a part.

Just as important, we diagnose the actual cause instead of throwing parts at the symptom. A furnace that short-cycles might need a $30 flame sensor cleaned — or it might have a cracked heat exchanger that makes repair the wrong choice. We'll tell you the difference honestly, give you upfront pricing before any work begins, and never pressure you into a replacement you don't need.

Common furnace problems we fix

  • No heat at all, or the furnace won't turn on
  • Furnace short-cycles — turns on and off every few minutes
  • Blows cold or lukewarm air instead of hot
  • Loud banging, rattling, screeching, or rumbling on startup
  • Pilot or igniter won't light, or the flame keeps going out
  • Blower runs constantly, or never comes on
  • Frequent tripped breakers or a furnace that locks out
  • Burning, musty, or gas-like smells when it runs
  • Weak airflow and rooms that won't warm up
  • Yellow or flickering burner flame instead of steady blue

What causes these problems

Most no-heat calls trace back to a handful of components. On gas furnaces, a dirty or worn flame sensor is the single most common culprit — it tells the control board the burners actually lit, and when it's coated in residue the furnace lights and then shuts off seconds later (classic short-cycling). Cracked hot-surface igniters, failing inducer or blower motors, bad capacitors, and faulty control boards round out the usual suspects. Oil furnaces add their own list: clogged nozzles, dirty electrodes, fuel filter and pump issues, and ignition-transformer faults.

Airflow problems cause a surprising number of breakdowns, too. A clogged filter starves the furnace of air, which makes the heat exchanger overheat and the high-limit switch shut everything down to protect the system. Left long enough, chronic overheating from neglected filters and blocked vents can shorten the life of expensive components — including the heat exchanger itself.

Finally, deferred maintenance and age catch up with every furnace. Connections loosen, sensors drift, bearings wear, and the small problems that an annual tune-up would have caught turn into a cold house on a January night. Many of the repairs we make are the direct result of a furnace that simply hadn't been serviced in years.

How it works

Our process

  1. 1

    Fast scheduling & dispatch

When you have no heat, we prioritize getting a technician to you quickly and confirm an arrival window so you're not left guessing.

  2. 2

    Full safety check on arrival

Before anything else we check for gas, electrical, and carbon-monoxide hazards — your safety comes before the repair.

  3. 3

    Thorough diagnosis

We test the furnace end to end — ignition, flame sensing, gas valve or oil burner, blower, capacitors, control board, and limits — to find the true cause, not just the symptom.

  4. 4

    Clear explanation & upfront price

We show you what's wrong, explain your options in plain language, and give firm pricing before any work starts — no surprises on the invoice.

  5. 5

    The repair, done right

With common parts stocked on our trucks, most repairs are completed on the spot using manufacturer-spec components installed to code.

  6. 6

    Test, verify & clean up

We run the furnace through full heating cycles, confirm safe operation and proper temperature rise, and leave your space clean.

  7. 7

    Honest next-step advice

We let you know what to watch, whether a tune-up would help, and — only if it genuinely makes sense — when replacement is the smarter long-term call.

Repair or replace?

Most furnace problems are worth repairing — especially when the unit is under about 12 years old and the fix is a sensor, igniter, capacitor, or motor. These are routine repairs, and a well-maintained furnace can run reliably for 15 to 20 years. If your furnace is on the newer side, repair is almost always the right answer.

Replacement deserves a serious look when the furnace is well into its second decade, the repair is a major one (heat exchanger, large control failure), or breakdowns are becoming a pattern. A reliable rule of thumb: if a single repair runs more than about a third of the cost of a new furnace and the unit is already 12–15+ years old, you're usually better off putting that money toward a high-efficiency replacement. A cracked heat exchanger is the clearest case of all — because it can leak carbon monoxide, we'll recommend replacement rather than a patch.

When replacement is the right move, a new high-efficiency furnace can cut your heating bills and may qualify for Mass Save rebates on qualifying equipment, plus 0% promotional financing with terms up to 60 months and long-term plans up to 10 years. But we'll never push you there. If a repair is the smart choice, we'll fix it — our goal is to give you the honest answer you'd reach yourself if you knew everything we know.

Good to know

Furnace Repair — frequently asked questions

Before you call, confirm the thermostat is set to heat and above room temperature, check that the furnace switch (it looks like a light switch nearby) is on, make sure the breaker hasn't tripped, and check that the filter isn't completely clogged. On many furnaces a dirty filter alone can trigger a safety shutdown. If those are fine and you still have no heat, give us a call — that's where our diagnosis comes in.
