Heat Pumps & Mini Splits
Heat Pump Maintenance & Tune-Ups
A heat pump runs all year — so it earns a tune-up twice a year. Seasonal maintenance that protects your efficiency, your warranty, and your comfort, from the same family-owned team since 1988.
Heat Pumps & Mini Splits
Heat Pump Maintenance in Southeastern Massachusetts
Your heat pump is the hardest-working piece of equipment in your home. Unlike a furnace that rests all summer or an air conditioner that sits idle all winter, a heat pump heats in the cold months and cools in the warm ones — which means it runs nearly year-round here in Southeastern Massachusetts. That single, two-job system is wonderfully efficient, but it also accumulates roughly twice the wear of a heating-only or cooling-only unit. That's exactly why heat pumps benefit from maintenance twice a year, not once.
Quality Home Heating & Air has maintained heat pumps across the South Shore and South Coast since 1988. A proper seasonal tune-up is far more than a quick look and a filter swap — we clean coils, verify refrigerant charge, test the defrost cycle and reversing valve, tighten and measure the electrical, and confirm the system is actually performing to spec heading into the season ahead. The goal is to catch small problems while they're still small, and to keep the system delivering the low operating costs that made you choose a heat pump in the first place.
We recommend service in spring, before the cooling season, and again in fall, before the heating season — so the system is ready for the months it works hardest. Most homeowners on a heat pump fold both visits into our maintenance plan, which bundles the two annual tune-ups, keeps you on the schedule automatically, and adds member perks like priority scheduling and repair discounts. However you book it, regular maintenance is the single best way to protect your equipment, your manufacturer warranty, and your eligibility for the Mass Save incentives that may apply to your system.
Why heat pumps need regular maintenance
- They run year-round — heating and cooling — so they wear about twice as fast
- Dirty coils quietly raise your electric bills and strain the compressor
- The reversing valve and defrost cycle are unique to heat pumps and need checking
- Refrigerant charge drifts over time and quietly kills efficiency
- Outdoor units collect leaves, grass, pollen, and snow/ice that block airflow
- Most manufacturer warranties require documented annual maintenance
- Many Mass Save rebate and program terms expect the system to be properly maintained
- Small issues caught in a tune-up are far cheaper than a mid-season breakdown
What causes these problems
A heat pump moves heat rather than burning fuel, and it does so through a tightly tuned loop of coils, refrigerant, and electrical components. When the outdoor coil fills with dirt or the indoor coil and filter clog, the system has to work harder to move the same amount of heat — efficiency drops, electric bills climb, and the compressor runs hotter than it should. Because the decline is gradual, most homeowners don't notice until the bill or the comfort is clearly off.
Heat pumps also have parts no other system has. The reversing valve flips the unit between heating and cooling, and the defrost cycle melts frost off the outdoor coil in winter. Both are reliable when maintained but expensive when neglected — a sticking reversing valve or a failed defrost control can leave you with a unit that ices over or won't switch modes. These are the components a heat-pump-specific tune-up is built to check, and they're easy to miss on a generic 'AC' service.
Finally, running two seasons a year simply doubles the exposure. Refrigerant charge drifts, capacitors weaken, contactors pit, and electrical connections loosen with thousands of run hours. Twice-yearly maintenance resets those small problems before a cold January night or a humid July afternoon turns them into a service call — and keeps the documentation your warranty and incentive programs expect.
How it works
Our process
- 1
Inspect & clean the coils
We clean the outdoor and indoor coils so the system can transfer heat freely — the single biggest factor in efficiency, capacity, and electric cost.
- 2
Check refrigerant charge
We measure pressures and temperatures and verify the charge is correct, since even a slight under- or over-charge quietly drags down efficiency and shortens compressor life.
- 3
Test the reversing valve
We confirm the valve switches cleanly between heating and cooling — a heat-pump-only component that's easy to overlook and costly to ignore.
- 4
Verify the defrost cycle
We test the defrost control and sensors so the outdoor coil sheds frost properly in winter instead of icing over and losing heat.
- 5
Service filters & airflow
We replace or clean filters and check airflow and the blower, because restricted air starves the system and forces it to overwork in both seasons.
- 6
Inspect & tighten electrical
We test the capacitor and contactor, measure amp draw, and tighten connections — loose or weak electrical parts are a leading cause of avoidable failures.
- 7
Test controls & report
We clear the condensate drain, check the thermostat and controls, confirm the temperature split, and walk you through anything we found and recommend.

“Kevin was great. He took the time with us to describe all options, and the pros and cons of each. His men did the job quickly and efficiently, leaving no trace other than the work they had done. It has only been a few days since they put in our system, but the difference from our old system is evident.”
“From the first call to the final walkthrough, the whole team was professional and on time. Our new system runs better than we expected and the price was fair.”
“Honest, knowledgeable, and clean. They explained every option, never upsold us, and had our system running the same day.”
