Electrical Panel Upgrade in Southeastern Massachusetts

Your electrical panel is the heart of your home's electrical system — every circuit, outlet, and appliance runs through it. Many homes across Southeastern Massachusetts are still served by panels that were sized decades ago, when a household ran a fraction of the electrical load it does today. A 60-, 100-, or split-bus panel that was generous in 1975 can be badly outmatched by a modern home full of electronics, kitchen appliances, central air, and electric heating.

Quality Home Heating & Air has wired, serviced, and upgraded electrical systems across the South Shore and South Coast since 1988. Electrical is a core part of what we do — not a sideline — and panel upgrades are one of the most common requests we handle. When a panel is undersized, obsolete, or simply out of capacity, our licensed electricians replace it with a properly sized, code-compliant service panel built for how you actually use power.

The single biggest driver of upgrades today is electrification. Adding a heat pump, ductless mini split, EV charger, induction range, or hot tub can push an older panel past what it was ever meant to carry. Older fuse boxes and certain failure-prone panel brands — Federal Pacific (FPE) and Zinsco in particular — are also a real safety concern, and replacing them is one of the best long-term investments you can make in your home. Whatever brought you here, we'll assess your service honestly and tell you exactly what your home needs.

Signs your electrical panel needs an upgrade

  • Breakers that trip often, or have to be reset regularly
  • Lights that flicker or dim when large appliances start up
  • A panel or breakers that feel warm, hum, or buzz
  • An older fuse box instead of circuit breakers
  • No open slots left — every circuit is full
  • You're adding a heat pump, mini split, EV charger, or other large load
  • A 60- or 100-amp service in a home that needs more capacity
  • Any burning smell, scorch marks, or discoloration around the panel
  • A Federal Pacific (FPE), Zinsco, or other recalled/obsolete panel

What causes these problems

Most panel problems come down to capacity. Electrical service is rated in amps — older homes were commonly built with 60- or 100-amp service, which was plenty for the appliances of the era. As households added central air, electric water heaters, larger kitchens, and now heat pumps and EV charging, the demand on that same panel climbed steadily. A panel that's simply out of room or near its rated capacity will trip breakers, run warm, and leave you unable to add the circuits a modern home needs.

Age and design are the other big factors. Fuse boxes and split-bus panels are obsolete and difficult to expand safely. More seriously, certain panel brands — most notably Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) Stab-Lok and Zinsco — have a documented history of breakers that fail to trip during a fault, which defeats the protection a panel is supposed to provide. There's no reliable repair for these; replacement is the recognized fix.

Finally, wear shows up at the connections. Decades of thermal cycling can loosen lugs and bus connections, and corrosion or past water intrusion can degrade them further — both of which cause the heat, buzzing, and discoloration that signal a panel living on borrowed time. A new panel restores clean, tight, properly torqued connections throughout.

How it works

Our process

  1. 1

    Electrical load assessment

A licensed electrician evaluates your existing service, panel condition, grounding, and the loads you have now plus what you're adding — so we size the new service correctly rather than guessing.

  2. 2

    Honest recommendation & quote

You get a clear explanation of what your home needs (commonly a 200-amp service), with upfront pricing and any financing options — and no pressure to over-buy.

  3. 3

    Utility coordination scheduled

We coordinate with your electric utility for the temporary disconnect and reconnect of your service, and schedule the work to minimize the time your power is off.

  4. 4

    Old panel safely removed

We de-energize the service, then remove the old panel, fuse box, or failure-prone unit and prepare the area for a clean, code-compliant installation.

  5. 5

    New panel installed to code

We mount and wire the new service panel and breakers, transfer and label every circuit, and bring grounding and bonding up to current code.

  6. 6

    Testing & power restored

We verify connections are properly torqued, confirm grounding, test the circuits, and restore power — then make sure everything in your home is working as it should.

  7. 7

    Walkthrough & cleanup

We show you the new panel and its clearly labeled directory, answer your questions, and leave your home clean — taking the old equipment with us.

Good to know

Electrical Panel Upgrade — frequently asked questions

For most homes today, 200-amp service is the right choice — it gives you ample capacity for central air, electric heating, a heat pump, EV charging, and modern kitchen appliances with room to spare. A 100-amp service can be adequate for a smaller home with modest electrical demand, but it's frequently the bottleneck once electrification is on the table. We run a load assessment and recommend the size that fits how you actually use power, so you're not paying for more than you need or boxed in later.

“Kevin was great. He took the time with us to describe all options, and the pros and cons of each. His men did the job quickly and efficiently, leaving no trace other than the work they had done. It has only been a few days since they put in our system, but the difference from our old system is evident.”
