AC Installation & Replacement in Southeastern Massachusetts
When your central air conditioner reaches the end of its life, replacing it is one of the highest-impact upgrades you can make to your home — done right, a new system is quieter, far more efficient, and dramatically more comfortable on the hottest, most humid days of a Southeastern Massachusetts summer. Done wrong, an improperly sized or sloppily installed system can short-cycle, struggle with humidity, and cost you for years.
Quality Home Heating & Air has installed and replaced central air conditioning across the South Shore and South Coast since 1988. Every replacement starts with a proper Manual J load calculation — we size the system to your home, not to whatever was there before — and ends with a fully commissioned, verified install, not just a swap-out.
Most homeowners come to us because an aging system finally gave out, repair bills are adding up, or an older unit still runs on phased-out R-22 refrigerant that's now extremely expensive to recharge. Whatever the reason, we'll walk you through your options honestly — including high-efficiency systems that qualify for Mass Save rebates and 0% financing — so you can make the right call for your home and budget.
Signs it's time to replace your AC
- Your system is 12–15+ years old
- Repairs are getting frequent or expensive
- It still uses R-22 (Freon) refrigerant
- Rising electric bills every summer
- Uneven cooling or rooms that never get comfortable
- Constant short-cycling (turns on and off)
- The house feels humid even when it's running
- Loud operation, or it can't keep up on hot days
What causes these problems
Central AC systems typically last 12–18 years in our climate. As compressors, coils, and capacitors age, efficiency drops and breakdowns become more likely — especially when maintenance has been deferred. A system that needed one repair a few years ago often starts needing several.
Sizing is the other big factor. An oversized unit cools the air quickly but shuts off before it removes humidity, leaving the house clammy and short-cycling the compressor. An undersized unit runs constantly and still can't keep up. Both shorten equipment life — which is why we re-calculate the load on every replacement rather than matching the old tonnage by default.
Finally, refrigerant matters. Older systems use R-22, which has been phased out and is now costly and hard to source. Once an R-22 system develops a leak, recharging it repeatedly rarely makes financial sense compared with a modern, more efficient replacement.

- 4
Old equipment removed
We safely recover refrigerant, remove and dispose of the old condenser and coil, and protect your home throughout.
- 5
Professional installation
New condenser, coil, line set as needed, electrical, condensate, and a new thermostat — installed to code and manufacturer spec.

Repair or replace?
Not sure whether to repair or replace? A good rule of thumb: if your system is under about 10 years old and the repair is minor, repair usually wins. Once a unit is 12–15+ years old, needs a major component (compressor, coil), or runs on R-22, replacement is almost always the smarter long-term decision.
A simple test is the repair-cost rule — if a repair costs more than about a third of a new system (and the unit is well into its second decade), you're usually better off replacing. Factor in summer energy savings from a modern high-SEER2 system, plus Mass Save rebates and financing, and replacement often costs less over time than nursing an old system along.
We'll always give you the honest answer for your situation — sometimes that's a repair. Our job is to help you make the decision you'd make if you knew everything we know.
