Boiler Repair in Southeastern Massachusetts
When a boiler quits in the middle of a Southeastern Massachusetts cold snap, it isn't a minor inconvenience — it's no heat, no hot water on some systems, and the real risk of frozen pipes. Boilers are also one of the more nuanced systems in a home: steam, hot-water (hydronic), and modern wall-hung combi boilers each behave differently, and a fast, correct diagnosis takes someone who works on all three every season.
Quality Home Heating & Air has repaired boilers across the South Shore and South Coast since 1988. We service classic cast-iron steam and hot-water boilers as well as today's high-efficiency wall-hung and combi units — so whether your home was heated the same way for fifty years or you've got a modern condensing boiler with a control board, we know what to look for and how to fix it without guesswork.
Most homeowners call us for one of a handful of reasons: no heat at all, a leak, pressure that won't hold, radiators or pipes that bang and knock, or a boiler that keeps locking out on ignition. We find the actual cause — not just the symptom — give you straight pricing before we start, and tell you honestly when a repair makes sense and when you'd be better served replacing an aging unit.
Common boiler problems we repair
- No heat — the boiler won't fire or won't stay running
- No hot water from a combi or tankless-coil boiler
- Leaking water around the boiler, valves, or piping
- Low pressure, or pressure that drops and won't hold
- Banging, knocking, or gurgling pipes and radiators (kettling/water hammer)
- Pilot won't light, or the unit keeps locking out on ignition
- A circulator pump that's noisy, seized, or not moving water
- Radiators or zones that stay cold while others heat fine
- Frequent short-cycling or error/fault codes on the display
- Visible rust, soot, or a persistent gas/oil smell near the unit
What causes these problems
Boiler trouble usually traces back to one of a few systems: the controls and ignition (thermostat, aquastat, gas valve, igniter, flame sensor, or control board), the water side (circulator pump, expansion tank, low-water cutoff, air in the loop, or a failing zone valve), or the pressure/safety side (auto-feed valve, pressure-reducing valve, and the relief valve). A no-heat call can come from any of them, which is why a methodical diagnosis matters more here than on almost any other system in the house.
Banging and knocking — kettling on a hot-water boiler or water hammer on a steam system — is a common complaint with very different causes. On hydronic systems it's often scale buildup on the heat exchanger or trapped air; on steam it's typically a flooded or poorly pitched main, bad venting, or a failing return. Low pressure that won't hold usually points to a leak, a waterlogged expansion tank, or a tired pressure-reducing valve. Each has a real fix — masking it by simply adding water only hides the underlying problem.
Age and neglected maintenance make all of this more likely. Sediment and scale insulate the heat exchanger and overwork the boiler, low-water cutoffs and relief valves get crusty and stick, and pump bearings and expansion tanks simply wear out. Many of the no-heat calls we run in January trace back to small issues that a fall tune-up would have caught — which is also why we'll tell you when a repair is the smart fix and when a unit is too far gone to keep chasing.
How it works
Our process
- 1
Fast scheduling for no-heat calls
Lost heat is a priority — we get a technician out quickly, especially when temperatures are low and frozen pipes are a real risk.
- 2
Full system diagnosis
We test the controls, ignition, pump, pressure, and safeties — and identify the actual cause, not just the symptom that tripped the system.
- 3
Clear explanation & upfront pricing
You get a plain-English diagnosis and firm pricing before any work begins. No surprises, no pressure.
- 4
The repair, done right
We carry common boiler parts on the truck and use quality replacements so the fix holds — pumps, valves, igniters, controls, and more.
- 5
Pressure, water & combustion check
We bring the system back to proper pressure, bleed air where needed, and verify safe, clean operation before we call it done.
- 6
Test across every zone
We confirm the boiler fires reliably and that heat (and hot water, on combi units) reaches every zone and radiator it should.
- 7
Honest repair-or-replace guidance
If your boiler is aging or the repair is major, we'll lay out your options clearly so you can decide what's right for your home and budget.
What's included

- Straight repair-vs-replace advice for older units
Repair or replace?
Not sure whether to repair or replace? As a rule of thumb, if your boiler is under about 12–15 years old and the fault is a serviceable part — a pump, valve, igniter, or control — a repair is almost always the right call. Boilers are built to last, and a well-maintained unit can run reliably for two decades or more.
Replacement starts to make sense when an older boiler needs a major repair — a cracked heat exchanger or section, repeated leaks, or a failing block — or when repair bills are stacking up year after year. At that point a modern high-efficiency boiler can meaningfully cut your heating costs, qualify for Mass Save rebates on qualifying equipment, and be paid for over time with financing rather than nursing an old unit through another winter.
We'll always give you the honest answer for your situation — and very often that answer is simply to repair it. Our job is to help you make the decision you'd make if you knew everything we know, not to sell you a boiler you don't need.
