Heat Pumps & Mini Splits

Heat Pump Repair in Southeastern Massachusetts

A ducted heat pump does double duty — it heats your home in winter and cools it in summer using a single outdoor unit and your existing ductwork. That makes it one of the most efficient, versatile systems you can own, but it also means there are more moving parts and more ways for things to go wrong than a furnace or straight AC. When a heat pump fails, you can lose both heating and cooling at once, which is exactly why a fast, accurate diagnosis matters.

Quality Home Heating & Air has serviced and repaired heat pumps across the South Shore and South Coast since 1988. Heat pumps behave differently from conventional systems — they run in mild weather, they reverse their refrigerant flow between heating and cooling, and they go through defrost cycles in the cold. Technicians who don't work on them regularly often misread normal heat-pump behavior as a fault, or miss the real cause. We know what these systems are supposed to do, so we find what they're actually doing wrong.

Whether your unit has stopped heating on the coldest morning of the year, won't cool in July, is iced over, or is making a noise it never made before, we'll get to the bottom of it. We diagnose the true root cause, explain it in plain English, and give you an honest, upfront repair price before any work begins — so you're never surprised.

Common heat pump problems we fix

  • Not heating in winter (blowing cool or lukewarm air)
  • Not cooling in summer (running but no cold air)
  • Outdoor unit frozen over or coated in ice
  • Stuck in defrost — steaming, or cycling on and off oddly
  • Short-cycling (turns on and off every few minutes)
  • Little or no airflow from the vents
  • Ice or frost building up on the indoor coil
  • Strange noises — buzzing, grinding, screeching, or loud humming
  • Unit won't turn on, or trips the breaker
  • Auxiliary/emergency heat running constantly (high electric bills)

What causes these problems

The most common culprit behind a heat pump that won't heat or cool is refrigerant — specifically a low charge from a leak. A heat pump moves heat using refrigerant, so even a small loss leaves it unable to keep up, and the system may ice over or short-cycle as it struggles. Refrigerant doesn't get "used up"; if it's low, there's a leak that needs to be found and repaired, not just topped off. We leak-check and repair rather than repeatedly recharging a system that's losing charge.

Heat pumps also depend on a handful of components that conventional systems simply don't have. The reversing valve switches the unit between heating and cooling — when it fails or sticks, you can get cold air on a heat call (or warm air on a cool call). The defrost board and its sensors manage how the outdoor unit melts off winter frost; when they fail, the unit either ices solid or runs defrost when it shouldn't. Faulty thermistors and sensors feed the control board bad readings, leading to erratic behavior, short-cycling, or the system falling back on expensive electric auxiliary heat.

Beyond those, heat pumps share the usual suspects with any HVAC system: failing capacitors and contactors, a worn compressor, a bad fan motor, clogged coils, a dirty or restricted filter choking airflow, or thermostat and wiring faults. A frozen outdoor unit, for example, can come from low refrigerant, a defrost fault, or simply blocked airflow — which is why we diagnose the cause instead of guessing at a part.

How it works

Our process

  1. 1

    Full diagnostic

We inspect the system end to end — refrigerant pressures, electrical components, reversing valve, defrost controls, sensors, airflow, and the thermostat — to find the true root cause, not just the symptom.

  2. 2

    Clear explanation & upfront price

We show you what we found, explain it in plain language, and give you a firm repair price before any work starts. No surprises, no pressure.

  3. 3

    Restore safe operation

If your unit is iced over or unsafe to run, we safely thaw and protect it so we can test and repair without causing further damage.

  4. 4

    The repair

We replace the failed component — capacitor, contactor, reversing valve, defrost board, sensor, motor, control board, or repair a refrigerant leak — using quality parts.

  5. 5

    Refrigerant leak repair & recharge

If charge is low, we find and fix the leak, then recharge to the manufacturer's exact spec — never a guess, never a blind top-off.

  6. 6

    Test in both modes

We verify the system in heating AND cooling, confirm a proper temperature split, check the defrost cycle, and make sure it isn't leaning on auxiliary heat.

  7. 7

    Walkthrough

We confirm the fix with you, share what we found, and flag anything worth keeping an eye on — and leave your space clean.

Repair or replace?

Not every heat pump is worth repairing, and we'll always tell you the truth about yours. A good rule of thumb: if your system is under about 10 years old and the repair is a capacitor, contactor, sensor, or defrost board, repair is almost always the right call. Those are routine fixes that get a sound system running again for years.

The picture changes when a major component fails — a compressor or reversing valve — on a unit that's well into its second decade, or when the system is losing refrigerant through a leak that's expensive to chase. It changes further with refrigerant type: older heat pumps run on R-410A, which was the standard for years but is now being phased down, while new systems as of 2025 use lower-impact refrigerants like R-454B and R-32. If your aging heat pump has a significant R-410A leak, pouring money into recharging it often makes less sense than putting that money toward a modern, more efficient replacement.

When replacement is the smarter long-term move, we'll lay out your options honestly — including high-efficiency systems that qualify for Mass Save rebates (which stack on a replacement) and financing with 0% promotional options, terms up to 60 months, and long-term plans up to 10 years. But if a repair is the right answer for your situation, that's exactly what we'll recommend. Our job is to help you make the decision you'd make if you knew everything we know.

Good to know

Heat Pump Repair — frequently asked questions

Not necessarily, but it's worth checking. Heat pumps deliver air that's warm but cooler than a furnace, so it can feel cool on your hand even when it's working. However, genuinely cold air on a heat call usually points to a real problem — low refrigerant, a stuck reversing valve, or a defrost fault — and is worth a diagnostic. If you've lost heat entirely, call us and we'll get you back up and running.
