Boiler Installation & Replacement in Southeastern Massachusetts
A boiler is the heart of a hydronic heating system, and in our part of Massachusetts it does a lot of work — running hard from the first cold snap in October straight through to spring. When an old boiler finally reaches the end of its life, replacing it is one of the most worthwhile upgrades you can make: a modern, high-efficiency boiler is quieter, far more economical to run, and delivers the steady, even warmth that radiators and baseboard do best, without the dry, drafty feeling of forced air.
Quality Home Heating & Air has installed and replaced gas and oil boilers across the South Shore and South Coast since 1988. We work on cast-iron and condensing boilers, wall-hung and combi units, and steam and hot-water systems alike. Every replacement starts with a proper heat-loss calculation — we size the boiler to your home and your existing distribution, not to whatever happened to be in the basement before — and ends with a fully commissioned system that's been tested and balanced, not just fired up and left.
Most homeowners call us because an aging boiler is leaking, losing efficiency, or finally failing after decades of service — and because an old, oversized unit can quietly waste a large share of every heating dollar. Whatever brought you here, we'll walk you through your options honestly, including high-efficiency models that qualify for Mass Save rebates and 0% financing, so you can make the right decision for your home, your comfort, and your budget.
Signs it's time to replace your boiler
- Your boiler is 15–20+ years old
- Repairs are getting frequent or expensive
- Visible rust, corrosion, or leaks around the unit
- Heating bills keep climbing winter after winter
- Rooms heat unevenly or some radiators stay cold
- Low efficiency rating (an old AFUE in the 60–70% range)
- Rumbling, banging, or knocking when it fires
- The system needs frequent water top-offs or won't hold pressure
What causes these problems
Boilers are built to last — many run 15 to 25 years — but they don't run efficiently forever. Cast-iron sections crack, heat exchangers corrode from the inside, and internal scaling forces the unit to burn more fuel for the same heat. A boiler installed in the 1990s or early 2000s may be operating at 60–75% efficiency, meaning a quarter to a third of every heating dollar is going up the flue. Modern condensing boilers reach 90–95%+ efficiency, so the savings on a multi-decade replacement add up quickly.
Sizing is the other big factor, and it's where a lot of older installs went wrong. Many existing boilers are dramatically oversized — installed to the old rule of thumb rather than to an actual heat-loss calculation. An oversized boiler short-cycles: it fires, satisfies the thermostat quickly, shuts off, and repeats, which wastes fuel, wears out components, and leaves the house feeling unevenly heated. That's why we re-calculate the load on every replacement instead of matching the old BTU rating by default.
Leaks and water-side problems are the final warning. Once the heat exchanger or sections begin to leak, repeated patching rarely makes sense on a unit that's already well into its second decade. At that point, recurring repair bills and rising fuel costs almost always favor a modern, properly sized replacement.
How it works
Our process
- 1
In-home assessment & heat-loss calc
We evaluate your home, your existing distribution (baseboard, radiators, or radiant), fuel type, and venting, and run a heat-loss calculation to size the new boiler correctly.
- 2
Honest options & quote
You get clear good/better/best options with upfront pricing — gas vs. oil, standard vs. condensing, standalone vs. combi — including efficiency levels, rebates, and financing, with no pressure.
- 3
Rebates & financing handled
We identify the Mass Save rebates you qualify for on high-efficiency equipment and set up financing so the project fits your budget.
- 4
Old boiler removed
We drain the system, disconnect and remove the old boiler, and responsibly dispose of it, protecting your home throughout.
- 5
Professional installation
New boiler, near-boiler piping, circulators, expansion tank, venting, controls, and a new thermostat — installed to code and manufacturer spec, with the system properly purged of air.
- 6
Startup & commissioning
We fire and tune the boiler, run a combustion analysis, set the controls and water temperatures, and balance the system so it performs to its rating, not just 'runs.'
- 7
Walkthrough & cleanup
We register your warranty, show you the new boiler, controls, and thermostat, explain what to watch for, and leave your home cleaner than we found it.

Repair or replace?
Not sure whether to repair or replace? A good rule of thumb: if your boiler is under about 10–12 years old and the repair is minor — a circulator, an expansion tank, a control — repair usually wins. Once a boiler is 15–20+ years old, has a cracked section or leaking heat exchanger, or is running at a low efficiency, replacement is almost always the smarter long-term decision.
The repair-cost rule helps too: if a repair costs more than about a third of a new boiler and the unit is well into its second decade, you're usually better off replacing. Factor in the fuel savings from moving to a 90–95%+ efficiency condensing boiler, plus Mass Save rebates and financing, and a replacement often pays for a meaningful share of itself over the years you'll own it.
We'll always give you the honest answer for your situation — sometimes that's a repair, and we'll tell you so. Our job is to help you make the decision you'd make if you knew everything we know.
