Oil Burner Service in Southeastern Massachusetts
Oil heat is in our name — and it's been at the heart of what we do since 1988. Across Southeastern Massachusetts, thousands of homes still run on oil-fired furnaces and boilers, and they reward an owner who maintains them with decades of dependable, comfortable heat. The catch is that oil burners are far less forgiving than gas: they fire a fine mist of fuel through a precision nozzle, and as soot, sludge, and a worn nozzle accumulate over a season, efficiency drops, the system runs dirtier, and the odds of a no-heat call on the coldest night of the year climb fast.
An annual oil burner cleaning and tune-up is the single most important thing you can do to keep an oil system safe, efficient, and reliable — and it's the kind of work where deep, hands-on oil experience genuinely matters. Setting the right nozzle and electrode gap, adjusting the air-to-fuel mix, and reading a combustion test correctly are skills built over decades, not picked up from a manual. Our technicians have been servicing oil burners across the South Shore and South Coast for that long, and it shows in how cleanly and quietly we leave a system running.
Whether your burner is rumbling, throwing soot, locking out on its reset button, or simply due for its yearly service before heating season, Quality Home Heating & Air handles it. We service and repair oil-fired furnaces and boilers of every age and make, we're straight with you about what a system needs and what it doesn't, and when an old burner finally isn't worth nursing along, we'll tell you that honestly too.
Signs your oil burner needs service
- Rumbling, banging, or a loud "boom" when the burner fires
- An oil or smoky odor in the basement or throughout the house
- Soot or black streaks around the furnace, boiler, or chimney base
- You're hitting the red reset button more than once a season
- No heat — the burner won't fire or keeps locking out
- Burning through oil faster than usual for the same comfort
- Visible smoke from the chimney when the system runs
- It's simply been more than a year since your last cleaning
What causes these problems
Oil combustion is inherently dirtier than gas, and that's by design — the burner atomizes liquid fuel into a fine spray and ignites it, leaving behind soot and carbon that coat the combustion chamber, heat exchanger, and flue over a season. As that buildup accumulates it insulates the heat exchanger, so more of your fuel's heat goes up the chimney instead of into your home, and the system has to run longer to keep up. A neglected burner can quietly lose a meaningful chunk of its efficiency in a single winter.
The fuel itself is the other culprit. The nozzle that meters and atomizes the oil is a precision part with a tiny orifice — as it wears or clogs, the spray pattern distorts, combustion goes ragged, and you get rumbling, soot, and lockouts. Water and sludge that settle in the tank and lines clog filters and strainers, while worn or out-of-spec electrodes cause hard starts and the dreaded delayed ignition "boom." Most of these are normal wear items meant to be replaced or reset every year — which is exactly what an annual cleaning does.
When a burner repeatedly locks out on its reset button, that safety control is doing its job: it's shutting the system down because it isn't sensing proper, clean combustion. Pressing reset again and again doesn't fix the underlying cause and can flood the chamber with unburned oil. The right move is a proper cleaning and diagnosis to find out why it's locking out in the first place.
How it works
Our process
- 1
Inspection & safety check
We start by inspecting the burner, heat exchanger or sections, flue, and controls, and checking for soot, leaks, or odors before we touch a thing.
- 2
Replace the oil nozzle
We install a new nozzle matched to your burner's spec — the right flow rate, spray angle, and pattern — so the system atomizes and burns fuel cleanly.
- 3
Change the oil filter & clean the strainer
A fresh fuel filter and a cleaned pump strainer keep sludge and water out of the nozzle, which is the most common cause of dirty firing and lockouts.
- 4
Service electrodes & ignition
We inspect, clean, and re-gap (or replace) the electrodes and check the ignition so the burner lights instantly — no hard starts or delayed-ignition booms.
- 5
Clean the combustion chamber & heat exchanger
We brush and vacuum out accumulated soot and carbon so heat transfers efficiently into your home instead of escaping up the flue.
- 6
Inspect the flue & draft
We check the flue pipe, barometric damper, and chimney connection and confirm proper draft so combustion gases vent safely the way they should.
- 7
Combustion test & fine-tuning
Using combustion-analysis instruments, we measure efficiency, CO, draft, and smoke, then adjust the air-to-fuel mix until the burner runs clean, quiet, and at peak efficiency.
- 8
Verify operation & walkthrough
We run a full heating cycle, confirm every safety control trips correctly, and let you know the condition of your system and anything to watch.
